Police

1. When can I be fingerprinted?

Effective March 1, 2011, the Texas Department of Public Safety will only accept electronic fingerprint submissions. The Bowie Police Department, however, can still do fingerprints for general applications, such as for jobs and adoptions. We can do them anytime, but it is best between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.

2. When do they test the early warning system sirens?

The early warning alarm system sirens are tested on the first Monday of each month around 6:00 pm. This is also during the time of the monthly meeting of the Bowie Fire Department. The siren system will not be tested if we have bad weather during that time.

3. Sometimes I see something that looks suspicious, but I’m not sure it is. How do I know if I should report it?

If you see anything that seems suspicious, contact law enforcement immediately! If an actual crime is taking place, the sooner you inform law enforcement, the more likely they can take care of the problem. Don’t worry about bothering law enforcement or appearing foolish if what you have witnessed is not actually criminal activity. The Bowie Police Department wants residents to contact them whenever they see something suspicious.

Police - Bicycle Registration

1. My bicycle has been lost or stolen. What should I do?

Call the Bowie Police Department right away at 940-872-2251. The reporting process only takes a few minutes of your time. The more time that passes between the time your bicycle is missing and the time you report it, the more difficult it is to recover your bicycle. You will also be helping your neighbors and other bicycle owners by reporting your loss. Officers assigned to your patrol area will know that a theft occurred in your neighborhood and will be alert for suspicious activity.

When the officer responds, please try to have any paperwork you have about your bicycle available for review. The most important information is the make, serial number, model, and color. Of course, if you have already registered your bicycle with the Department the information will be available in our files.

If your bicycle was stolen or lost outside the City of Bowie, please make sure to contact the law enforcement agency where the incident occurred. If your bicycle was lost or stolen just outside of the City of Bowie, you should contact our department to determine if the bicycle has been found within our city.

Police - How to Mitigate Biting

1. What should I do if my dog bites someone?

Even if the bite can be explained (perhaps someone stepped on the dog's tail), it's important to take responsibility for your dog's actions by taking these steps: Restrain the dog immediately. Separate it from the scene of the attack. Confine it. Call 9-1-1 if paramedic response is required. Contact Bowie Police Communications at 940-872-2251 to report the bite (this is required by law), provide important information such as your name and address and information about your dog's most recent rabies vaccination. The person bitten may need to undergo rabies treatment. Consult your veterinarian for advice about dog behavior that will help prevent similar problems in the future.

If your own dog bit you, confine it immediately. Contact the Bowie Police Animal Control Section at 940-872-2275 and have your rabies vaccination records available.

Police - Rabies & Animal Bites

1. How do I keep from getting rabies?

Never touch unfamiliar or wild animals. Enjoy wild animals from afar. Avoid direct contact with stray animals. Stray cats and dogs may not have been vaccinated against rabies. Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home. Do not try to nurse sick animals to health. It is common to want to rescue and nurse a hurt wild animal, but that animal may have rabies. Call an animal control person or animal rescue group if you find a sick animal. Make sure that your trash cans and pet foods are secured so that they do not attract wild animals

2. What do I do if I am bitten by an animal?

If you are bitten by an animal, tell an adult immediately! Have the adult wash the wound well with soap and water for at least five minutes. You should then see a doctor as soon as possible for additional evaluation of the wound. Have an adult contact your local animal control officer. If the animal that bit you is a pet (dog, cat, or ferret), the animal may be watched for signs of rabies for about 10 days. If it is a wild animal, the animal control people may need to euthanize the animal to test its brain for rabies.

Bites from bats are the main source of rabies in humans in the United States today. It is possible, but rare, that someone might be bitten by the bat and not know it. If you discover a bat in the house, especially in the room of a sleeping person or child, treat this situation as though an actual bite has occurred. This is especially true if the bat is acting strangely (unusually tame). Contact your local or state health department for more information.

3. What do I do if someone else's dog bites me?

If someone else's dog bites you, contact Bowie Police Communications at 940-872-2251 to report the bite (this is required by law) and tell them everything you can about the dog: the owner's name, if you know it; color of the dog; size; where you saw it; and if you've seen it before. These details may help animal control officers locate the dog.

Dogs are wonderful companions. By acting responsibly, owners not only reduce the number of dog bites, but also enhance the relationships they have with their dogs.

No. Some vendors will be open but most are setting up and not ready for the public until 8AM on Saturday.

4. Can I reserve a space inside the Community Center during Second Monday?

Yes. The Community Center is open for vendors during Second Monday. This is a climate controlled space.

Water & Wastewater Treatment

1. Why does the water sometimes smell or taste like bleach?

To ensure proper disinfection of the water mains / lines in town we sometimes have to do what is called a burn out. That means that we stop using chloramines and use chlorine for a short time. This can give the water a bleach smell or taste, but it is not harmful in anyway.

2. Do we reuse the wastewater and send it back to town?

No we do not reuse the wastewater. It is discharged from the wastewater plant and sent down stream.

3. How much water do we treat each day?

At the water treatment plant we treat on average about 1.2 million gallons a day. At the wastewater plant we treat on average 650,000 to 700,000 gallons a day.
